Special Olympics Alaska Athlete Training Center and Campus
The Special Olympics Alaska Athlete Training Center and Campus project began in 2002, when the Board of Directors authorized the purchase of land at 3200 Mountain View Drive in Anchorage. A building campaign was launched by the Board of Directors, which resulted in the construction of an 8,000 square foot facility, valued at $2.5 million, that currently houses the Special Olympics Alaska program office and hosts athlete and coaches training programs. The building was dedicated on August 15, 2006. The center includes 1,000 square foot weight training and physical fitness center and a multi-purpose room for athletes and volunteers along with a board room, a classroom, and office space to administer the Special Olympics statewide program. On May 8, 2014 Special Olympics Alaska hosted the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the 20,000 square foot gymnasium, including a multi-purpose high school size basketball area, an indoor track, a commercial kitchen for event functions and nutrition education, and showers and lockers. Additionally, there is a classroom to be used for athlete, coach, volunteer, and family/support systems training. Specific education programs planned include: (1) healthy nutrition workshops, (2) healthy exercise and wellness programs, (3) family home training exercise and nutrition programs, (4) coaches and volunteer training, and (5) health promotion related programs.
